  • Accelerating Beyond 5G/6G R&D in NICT - The Critical Role of Space-Time Synchronization

The 5G mobile communication system has evolved from people's communication infrastructure to social infrastructure with the evolution of IoT and AI.

In the next generation, Beyond 5G/6G (B5G/6G), expected for around 2030, cyberspace and physical space will be integrated and will play an important role as the reliable social infrastructure of a Super-Smart Society, known as Society 5.0.

  • Trapping and Laser Spectroscopy of Thorium-229 Isomers for High-accuracy Nuclear Clocks

Thorium-229 has an excited nuclear state (isomer) at only 8.4 eV from the nuclear ground state, which enables direct laser spectroscopy of the thorium-229 nucleus. A nuclear clock, a frequency standard based on the optical transition frequency between the nuclear ground state and isomer, is expected to achieve high accuracy due to its small sensitivity to fluctuations in external electromagnetic fields. The thorium-229 nuclear clock also has proposed uses as a highly sensitive sensor to search for dark matter and variations in the fine-structure constant.
